Friends of Swan Lake
Welcome to the Friends of Swan Lake
Join us to protect the natural beauty of Swan Lake and its surroundings
Who we are
We are a group of local residents in Swan Lake, NY, who have come together to care for one of the last remaining pristine lakes in the Catskills and advocate for an economic revival based around sustainable development and responsible recreation.
What we do
We work with local and state officials and other community groups to monitor residential and commercial developments that may affect Swan Lake; engage in actions designed to avoid or mitigate any negative impacts on the lake and its surroundings; and encourage investment and development that respects the rural character of the area and protects clean, air, clean water, forests and wildlife.
We do this by researching the changing ecology and environment of Swan Lake and its rich resources; maintaining a close dialogue with the Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board over projects and proposals that may affect the lake; sharing information with local residents about what is happening in their community; and partnering with likeminded groups such as Beautify Swan Lake (which raises money for community improvement), the Catskill Clean Water Fund (which raises money to keep the lake free of invasive species and maintain water quality), and Catskill Mountainkeepers (which works to protect the environment).

Our long-term goal is to preserve Swan Lake for future generations by placing the lake and its surroundings under the protection of a non-profit organization, conservation easement or other similar arrangement.
How you can help
We offer a warm welcome to all residents of Swan Lake and the wider Town of Liberty who share our goals and want to protect the natural resources, environmental health and rural character of the community in which we live. As an all-volunteer group there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in research and analysis, organizing and outreach, advocacy and paralegal work, creating and circulating petitions, attending Town and other meetings and many other tasks.
